Design and Truth

"Eating is out most intimate interface with nature. To many cultures, eating is a kind of sacrament ("God, bless this food"). Sacred or not, cooking food is an elegant performance art, and eating food with appreciation is a way of realizing and celebrating our human presence in the physical world."

This a little piece of text from the book Design and Truth by Robert Grudin

2012: Time for Change

"I think, we are in some kind of final examination, as to whether human beings are qualified to take on the responsibility we’ve been designed to be entrusted with, and this is not a matter of examination of the types of governments, nothing to do with politics, nothing to do with economic systems, it’s to do with the individual. Does the individual have the courage to really go along with the truth?"

Every man is more than just himself; he also represents the unique, the very special and always significant and remarkable point at which the world’s phenomena intersect, only once in this way, and never again.

A man must first of all understand certain things. He has thousands of false ideas and false conceptions, chiefly about himself, and he must get rid of some of them before beginning to acquire anything new. Otherwise the new will be built on a wrong foundation and the result will be worse than before. To speak the truth is the most difficult thing in the world; one must study a great deal and for a long time in order to speak the truth. The wish alone is not enough. To speak the truth one must know what the truth is and what a lie is, and first of all in oneself. And this nobody wants to know.

The most terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile but that it is indifferent. But if we can come to terms with this indifference, then our existence as a species can have genuine meaning. However vast the darkness, we must supply our own light.
